What is Mysore practice

“Mysore practice” or “Mysore style Ashtanga” took its name from the city in the south of India where this practice was founded by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

It is an individualized practice in a group setting. You can join at any time, no matter your level. Beginners are more than welcome to join as this is the most effective and safe way of learning Ashtanga.

You practice at your own pace, guided by your own breath. The teacher is there to teach you the sequence, offer hands-on adjustments and help you go deeper into your practice. Even though there are many students in the room, you are completely independent in your practice. Still, the collective energy of the Mysore room adds another dimension to your practice and you feel empowered by your fellow practitioners.

In a Mysore setting you progress and learn the sequence fast as you’re not relying on the counting of the teacher. This is the first step to building your own practice that you can take anywhere.

Traditionally, Mysore practice is done 6 times a week but you can start with 2-3 times per week if you are a beginner and gradually add practices. Your first sessions as a beginner will be 30-45 minutes. Mysore practice should ideally be combined with one Led class per week. Led class will help you memorize the sequence, learn the counting and the vinyasas.
